What kids do
“Multiply. What happens to the zeros each time?”
Printed on the sheet:
- Multiplying by 10 adds one zero, by 100 adds two, by 1,000 adds three.
Teacher tip
Ask kids to explain the pattern in their own words. “Add zeros” is a start; “each digit moves left” is the real idea.
How to use it
- Have kids star the facts they know by heart and practice the rest on flash cards.
- Use the same sheet twice in one week and compare the scores.
- Do the first problem together under a document camera, then let kids finish on their own.
Watch for
Kids who add instead of multiply when they are tired. Ask them to read the sign out loud.
Talk about it
- Why does turning the factors around give the same product?
- Which problem was the hardest? What made it hard?
