What kids do

“Count how many times the number repeats. Write it as a multiplication sentence and solve.”

Sample problems

  • 3+3+3+3+3+3
  • 7+7+7+7+7
  • 6+6+6
  • 6+6+6+6
  • 9+9+9+9+9
  • 8+8+8+8+8+8

Teacher tip

Read each row as “3 groups of 4” before writing 3 × 4. The words bridge addition and multiplication.

How to use it

  • Start with two minutes of skip counting out loud for the tables on the sheet.
  • Let kids draw quick arrays for any fact they don’t know yet.
  • Do the first problem together under a document camera, then let kids finish on their own.

Watch for

Lost place value in the second partial product. Remind kids to write the zero first.

Talk about it

  • How can 5 × 6 help you with 6 × 6?
  • Which problem was the hardest? What made it hard?

Take it further

Look for multiplication in the room: windows in rows, egg cartons, desk groups.
