What kids do

“Multiply the row number by the column number. Write the products in the empty squares.”

Printed on the sheet:

  1. Look for patterns: the 5s end in 5 or 0, the 10s end in 0, and the chart is the same on both sides of the diagonal.

Teacher tip

Ask kids to find and color one pattern when they finish, like the diagonal of square numbers.

How to use it

  • Let kids draw quick arrays for any fact they don’t know yet.
  • Have kids star the facts they know by heart and practice the rest on flash cards.
  • Do the first problem together under a document camera, then let kids finish on their own.

Watch for

Kids who add instead of multiply when they are tired. Ask them to read the sign out loud.

Talk about it

  • Why does turning the factors around give the same product?
  • Which problem was the hardest? What made it hard?

Take it further

Play multiplication war with a deck of cards: flip two, multiply, highest product wins.
