What kids do

“Count the hundreds (big squares), the tens (long bars) and the ones (small cubes). Write the number.”

Teacher tip

Count the flats by hundreds out loud, then switch to tens and ones.

How to use it

  • Build the first number with base-ten blocks before kids write anything.
  • Draw a place value chart on the board and keep it up while kids work.
  • Do the first problem together under a document camera, then let kids finish on their own.

Watch for

Zeros as placeholders. Kids often write 307 as 37 or three hundred seven as 3007.

Talk about it

  • Which is bigger and how can you tell without counting?
  • Which problem was the hardest? What made it hard?

Take it further

Play “build the biggest number” with digit cards in pairs.
