What kids do

“Put a dot where the number goes. Which end is it closer to? That is the rounded number.”

Printed on the sheet:

  1. Round 267 to the nearest ten
  2. Round 96 to the nearest ten
  3. Round 32 to the nearest ten
  4. Round 271 to the nearest hundred
  5. Round 443 to the nearest hundred

Teacher tip

Mark the halfway point on each line first. That makes rounding a visual choice.

How to use it

  • Build the first number with base-ten blocks before kids write anything.
  • Draw a place value chart on the board and keep it up while kids work.
  • Do the first problem together under a document camera, then let kids finish on their own.

Watch for

Zeros as placeholders. Kids often write 307 as 37 or three hundred seven as 3007.

Talk about it

  • What is this digit worth? How do you know?
  • Which problem was the hardest? What made it hard?

Take it further

Make number riddles: “I have 3 hundreds, no tens and 7 ones.”
