What kids do

“Count the digits first. Same number of digits? Compare from the left, one place at a time.”

Printed on the sheet:

  1. Write <, > or =
  2. Order from least to greatest

Teacher tip

Count the digits first. More digits always means a bigger whole number.

How to use it

  • Build the first number with base-ten blocks before kids write anything.
  • Draw a place value chart on the board and keep it up while kids work.
  • Do the first problem together under a document camera, then let kids finish on their own.

Watch for

Zeros as placeholders. Kids often write 307 as 37 or three hundred seven as 3007.

Talk about it

  • Which is bigger and how can you tell without counting?
  • Which problem was the hardest? What made it hard?

Take it further

Have kids find big numbers in the newspaper or a fact book and write them in expanded form.
