What kids do

“Write one digit in each column. Start with the ones on the right.”

Printed on the sheet:

  1. Commas split a number into groups of three: millions, thousands and ones.

Teacher tip

Teach kids to read the number in groups of three with the commas.

How to use it

  • Read each number out loud as a class so kids hear the place names.
  • Let kids use a place value mat or a folded paper chart under their sheet.
  • Do the first problem together under a document camera, then let kids finish on their own.

Watch for

Rounding the wrong digit. Have kids underline the place they are rounding to first.

Talk about it

  • What happens to a number when you move a digit one place to the left?
  • Which problem was the hardest? What made it hard?

Take it further

Play “build the biggest number” with digit cards in pairs.
