What kids do

“Add or subtract the tens. The ones stay the same!”

Teacher tip

Show it with tens rods: only the rods change, the loose ones stay put.

How to use it

  • Ask kids to circle the problems they are sure of first, then go back to the tricky ones.
  • Keep a number line or hundred chart taped to the desk for kids who need it.
  • Do the first problem together under a document camera, then let kids finish on their own.

Watch for

Columns that drift. Turn lined paper sideways or use graph paper to keep digits lined up.

Talk about it

  • Which answer could you check by doing the opposite operation?
  • Which problem was the hardest? What made it hard?

Take it further

Turn three problems into story problems and illustrate one of them.
