What kids do

“Check each goal for every piece of writing you finish. Watch which goals you get every time.”

Printed on the sheet:

  1. A strong beginning
  2. Details and examples
  3. Neat and readable
  4. The goal I will work on next:

Teacher tip

Have kids pick one goal to focus on for each new piece.

How to use it

  • Help each student pick one goal that is small and clear.
  • Check in on goals once a week at the same time.
  • Keep a stack of copies in a labeled tray so you can grab one without stopping the lesson.

Watch for

Kids comparing scores with each other. Keep the focus on beating your own best.

Talk about it

  • What goal are you working on?
  • Why do you think we use this in our classroom?

Take it further

Share trackers at a student-led conference with families.

US Letter, prints well in black and white. Free for home and classroom use: print as many copies as you need.
