What kids do

“Your teacher picks a number. Write it at the top, then show it every way you can.”

Printed on the sheet:

  1. Today’s number is:
  2. Show it with tally marks.
  3. Draw that many circles.
  4. Write a number story with your number.

Teacher tip

Let a different student pick the number each day, such as the date or their age.

How to use it

  • Keep the format the same each day so kids work on their own.
  • Play quiet music while kids work to set a calm tone.
  • Keep a stack of copies in a labeled tray so you can grab one without stopping the lesson.

Watch for

Problems kids miss every day. Those skills need a mini-lesson, not more practice.

Talk about it

  • What did you remember from last week?
  • How can this help you be ready to learn?

Take it further

Collect the hardest questions and review them on Friday.

US Letter, prints well in black and white. Free for home and classroom use: print as many copies as you need.
