What kids do

“Your teacher writes a new word on the board. Learn it four ways: what it is, what it means, what it looks like and how to use it.”

Printed on the sheet:

  1. Word of the day:
  2. What it means, in my own words
  3. A picture of the word
  4. A word that means the same:
  5. A word that means the opposite:
  6. Use the word in a sentence about you.

Teacher tip

Pick the word from your read-aloud or a science unit so kids hear it again during the day.

How to use it

  • Have the page on desks before kids arrive so they can start right away.
  • Go over the answers together at the start of the lesson.
  • Fill one in with the class the first time so kids see what a finished one looks like.

Watch for

Kids who arrive late and feel rushed. Let them finish at another time.

Talk about it

  • How did you check your work?
  • What is one thing that went well this week?

Take it further

Let early finishers write their own problem for tomorrow’s page.

US Letter, prints well in black and white. Free for home and classroom use: print as many copies as you need.
