What kids do

“Make a plan for when big feelings show up. Keep it in your desk so you can use it when you need it.”

Printed on the sheet:

  1. Things that make me upset
  2. How my body feels when I’m upset
  3. Ways I can calm down (check 3)
  4. My plan, step by step
  5. A grown-up who can help:
  6. My signal for “I need a break”:

Teacher tip

Practice the calm-down strategies when the child is calm, so they are ready when feelings are big.

How to use it

  • Give the sheet only when the child is calm. Reflection does not work in the middle of big feelings.
  • Sit next to the student and talk it through, especially for younger kids.
  • Introduce the sheet once, model it, then make it part of a routine so kids know what to expect.

Watch for

Students who write what they think you want to hear. Ask follow-up questions.

Talk about it

  • How do you think the other person felt?
  • How can this help you be ready to learn?

Take it further
