What kids do

“A real apology names what you did, says how it made the other person feel and tells what you will do next time. Fill in the letter.”

Printed on the sheet:

  1. I am sorry that I
  2. It was wrong because
  3. I think it made you feel
  4. Next time I will
  5. Check your letter
  6. I said what I did
  7. I did not blame anyone
  8. I said how they felt

Teacher tip

Make sure the apology is the child’s own words and only send it when they mean it.

How to use it

  • Give the sheet only when the child is calm. Reflection does not work in the middle of big feelings.
  • Sit next to the student and talk it through, especially for younger kids.
  • Print it on colored paper so kids and helpers can spot it quickly.

Watch for

Students who write what they think you want to hear. Ask follow-up questions.

Talk about it

  • Who can help you with your plan?
  • What is one thing that went well this week?

Take it further

Check in a few days later to see how the plan is working.

US Letter, prints well in black and white. Free for home and classroom use: print as many copies as you need.
