What kids do

“Post this on rainy days. Go over it before indoor recess starts, and point to it when the room gets loud.”

Printed on the sheet:

  1. What it looks like
  2. Level 2 table talk. No yelling or screaming.
  3. Walking feet, no tag or wrestling inside.
  4. Our indoor recess choices
  5. Pick a game, play it at a table or on the rug, put it back before a new one.
  6. Take turns, invite others to join, and switch when the timer rings.
  7. When the signal sounds, freeze, then clean up your spot in two minutes.

Teacher tip

Post the page by the indoor recess bins so kids can check it on rainy days.

How to use it

  • Write the rules together in the first weeks of school so kids own them.
  • Keep rules short and positive: say what to do, not what not to do.
  • Print it on colored paper so kids and helpers can spot it quickly.

Watch for

Too many rules. Keep the list to three to five that cover most situations.

Talk about it

  • Why do we have this rule?
  • Why do you think we use this in our classroom?

Take it further

Make a class book or poster of the rules and post it where everyone can see it.

US Letter, prints well in black and white. Free for home and classroom use: print as many copies as you need.
