Drawing and reading: draw the characters from your favorite books

Drawing a book character is a great way to show you understood the story. Here are ten reading response ideas.

By Kevin Coulston, cartoonist and author of the FirstArtBooks drawing books

Drawing is a strong reading response because it asks kids to picture the story: who the characters are, where it happens and what matters most. Simple activities include drawing a character, the setting, a favorite scene, a new ending or a new book cover. They work from kindergarten to grade 5 and are a great fit for reluctant writers.

Why drawing helps reading

  • Visualizing is a core reading skill; drawing makes it concrete.
  • It shows understanding without a long written answer.
  • It sparks discussion. “Why did you draw her looking sad?”
  • It’s motivating for kids who find writing hard.

10 reading response drawing ideas

  1. Draw the main character. Add three words that describe them.
  2. Draw the setting. Where and when does the story happen?
  3. Favorite scene. Draw it and write one sentence about why.
  4. Beginning, middle, end. Three boxes.
  5. A new ending. Draw what else could have happened.
  6. A new book cover. Design your own cover with the title.
  7. Character feelings. Draw the character at the start and end. How did they change? See cartoon expressions.
  8. Comic retelling. Retell the story in four panels. See make a comic with kids.
