Grid drawing for focus: an activity that slows kids down

One square at a time is calm, absorbing work. That makes grid drawing a great focus activity.

By Kevin Coulston, cartoonist and author of the FirstArtBooks drawing books

Grid drawing builds focus because it asks kids to pay attention to one small square at a time. The task is clear, each step is short, and progress is visible, so kids settle into it. Many parents and teachers use grid pages as a calm, absorbing activity for kids who find it hard to sit still or concentrate.

Why grid drawing helps concentration

  • A small, clear task. “Copy this one square” is easy to start.
  • Built-in progress. Every finished square is a small win.
  • Close looking. Kids have to really look, which pulls attention inward.
  • A satisfying finish. The picture appears gradually, which keeps kids going.
  • No blank page. There’s no “what should I draw?” moment.

How to use it for focus

  1. Start small. A simple picture with big squares.
  2. Set a calm scene. Quiet music, a clear table, one page.
  3. Use a window card. Cut a square hole in an index card to show only one square at a time.
  4. Count squares, not minutes. “Let’s do the top row” feels doable.
  5. Celebrate the finish. Color it in and hang it up.

When it helps most

For kids who struggle with attention

Grid drawing isn’t a treatment for anything, but many kids who struggle to focus enjoy its structure. Keep sessions short, let kids stand or fidget, and choose subjects they love. See drawing activities for kids with ADHD for more ideas.
