What kids do

“A concluding sentence wraps up a paragraph. It says the main idea again in a new way. Write one for each paragraph.”

Printed on the sheet:

  1. Try starting with
  2. As you can see,
  3. Octopuses are amazing animals. They have eight arms covered in suckers. They can change color to hide from enemies. Some can even squeeze through a hole the size of a coin.
  4. Our school field day was a blast. We ran races in the morning. After lunch, we had a water balloon toss. Then the teachers raced the fifth graders in a relay.
  5. Taking care of a puppy is hard work. You have to feed it two or three times a day. It needs walks, even in the rain. You also have to clean up its messes.

Teacher tip

Teach kids to restate the topic sentence in new words for a strong ending.

How to use it

  • Read the paragraph aloud together before kids mark anything.
  • Model one fix on the document camera, thinking out loud.
  • Keep a word wall or a word bank in reach so spelling does not stop the ideas.

Watch for

Kids who rewrite everything instead of fixing what is marked. Keep changes small and on purpose.

Talk about it

  • What is this paragraph mostly about?
  • Which sentence on your sheet are you proudest of? Why?

Take it further

Have kids use the same steps on a paragraph from their own journal.
