What kids do

“This report should be three paragraphs. Start a new paragraph when the main idea changes. Mark the 2 places with ¶.”

Printed on the sheet:

  1. Ask “What is this part about?” When the answer changes, a new paragraph starts.
  2. Sharks are some of the oldest animals on Earth. They lived even before the dinosaurs. Today there are more than 500 kinds of sharks. Sharks have amazing senses. They can smell a tiny bit of blood from far away. They can also feel fish moving in the water. Many kinds of sharks are in danger.
  3. People catch too many of them. We can help by learning about sharks and keeping the oceans clean.
  4. Paragraph 1 main idea
  5. Paragraph 2 main idea
  6. Paragraph 3 main idea

Teacher tip

Ask kids to listen for when the topic changes as you read the report aloud.

How to use it

  • Have kids use one color for revision and another for editing.
  • Post the editing or revision checklist on the board.
  • Let early writers draw first, then talk, then write.

Watch for

Revising and editing mixed up. Revising is the ideas; editing is the rules.

Talk about it

  • What is this paragraph mostly about?
  • Which sentence on your sheet are you proudest of? Why?

Take it further

Trade paragraphs with a partner for a peer edit.

US Letter, prints well in black and white. Free for home and classroom use: print as many copies as you need.
