What kids do

“Put a finger on the line after each word. That is how big a space should be. Copy each sentence.”

Printed on the sheet:

  1. Write a word. Put your finger down. Write the next word on the other side of your finger.
  2. The sun is hot.

Teacher tip

Give kids a craft stick “spaceman” to place between words as they write.

How to use it

  • Check pencil grip at the start, and keep the sheet tilted for comfort.
  • Keep sessions short: ten good minutes beats thirty tired ones.
  • Model the first answer on the board, thinking out loud as you write.

Watch for

Tight grips and sore hands. Try a pencil grip or a thicker pencil.

Talk about it

  • Where does this letter start on the lines?
  • Where else do writers use this skill?

Take it further

Write the letters with a wet sponge on a chalkboard.

US Letter, prints well in black and white. Free for home and classroom use: print as many copies as you need.
