Teacher tip

Make a quick chart with now (am, is, are) and before (was, were) side by side.

How to use it

  • Color-code parts of speech (nouns blue, verbs red) across the unit.
  • Have kids test each answer by saying the word in a sentence.
  • Give a minute at the end to reread the work out loud to a partner.

Watch for

Memorized rules without examples. Have kids say their own example for each one.

Talk about it

  • Can a word be a noun in one sentence and a verb in another?
  • Where else do writers use this skill?

Take it further

Have kids hunt for the part of speech in a library book and list five.

US Letter, prints well in black and white. Free for home and classroom use: print as many copies as you need.
