What kids do

“Read each true fact. Copy it in your neatest writing. Remember the capital letter and the period.”

Printed on the sheet:

  1. A snail has one foot.
  2. Frogs drink with their skin.
  3. An owl can turn its head far.
  4. A group of fish is a school.
  5. Write one more animal fact you know.

Teacher tip

Ask kids to read each fact to a partner after copying, checking that every word is readable.

How to use it

  • Model each letter on the board, saying the strokes out loud (start at the top, pull down).
  • Have kids trace the letter in the air and on their palm before the pencil.
  • Give a minute at the end to reread the work out loud to a partner.

Watch for

Letters started from the bottom. Gently redirect to top-down strokes before habits set.

Talk about it

  • Where does this letter start on the lines?
  • Where else do writers use this skill?

Take it further

Practice the same letters in a tray of sand, salt or shaving cream.
