What kids do

“Read each sentence. Does it make sense, or is it silly? Circle one.”

Printed on the sheet:

  1. The cat says moo.
  2. I eat soup with a spoon.
  3. The fish rides a bike.
  4. We sleep in a bed.
  5. The sun is cold.
  6. A bird can fly.
  7. My shoe can sing.
  8. Draw one of the silly sentences

Teacher tip

Read the silly sentences in a silly voice. Kids remember the rule when they are laughing.

How to use it

  • Read each answer aloud: if it sounds unfinished, it probably is.
  • Do the first two examples together, then let kids work with a partner.
  • Keep a word wall or a word bank in reach so spelling does not stop the ideas.

Watch for

Missing end marks. Have kids touch the last word and add a mark every time.

Talk about it

  • Which sentence sounded better after you changed it?
  • Where else do writers use this skill?

Take it further

Play sentence relay: each kid adds one word to a growing sentence.
