What kids do

“Each group of words is missing a part. Does it need a who (naming part) or a what they do (telling part)? Circle one.”

Printed on the sheet:

  1. Jumped in the puddle. → needs a who → The frog jumped in the puddle.
  2. Ran to the bus.
  3. Needs a what they do
  4. The big brown bear.
  5. Swims in the lake.
  6. My little sister.
  7. Ate all the grapes.
  8. The tall green tree.

Teacher tip

Have kids ask “who?” and “did what?” for each fragment to find the missing part.

How to use it

  • Build a sentence on the board with word cards before the sheet.
  • Have kids clap once for the naming part and once for the telling part.
  • Read the directions aloud so the sheet is about writing, not decoding the directions.

Watch for

Kids who think a long sentence must be a run-on. Length is not the problem; missing joins are.

Talk about it

  • Can you find a sentence like this in your reading book?
  • What did you change when you reread your work?

Take it further

Have kids find and fix one sentence in their own writing journal.
