What kids do

“An adjective tells more about a noun: what kind, what color, what size. Underline the adjective in each sentence.”

Printed on the sheet:

  1. 1. The fluffy cat sleeps.
  2. 2. I have a red kite.
  3. 3. We saw a huge whale.
  4. 4. The soup is hot.
  5. 5. She wore shiny shoes.
  6. 6. It was a noisy party.
  7. Write four adjectives that describe this blob.
  8. Use two of your adjectives in a sentence about the blob.

Teacher tip

Pass around a mystery object and have kids describe it with adjectives before they look.

How to use it

  • Review the part of speech with three quick examples on the board first.
  • Act out verbs and adverbs, and hold up objects for nouns and adjectives.
  • Read the directions aloud so the sheet is about writing, not decoding the directions.

Watch for

Kids sorting by meaning instead of job in the sentence. Ask what the word is doing.

Talk about it

  • Find one of these words in a book you are reading.
  • What did you change when you reread your work?

Take it further

Play a silly fill-in-the-blank story game with nouns, verbs and adjectives.
