Thinking sheet · Look and wonder

Same and Different

A cartoon velociraptor and a robot T. rex. Sort what they share and what makes each one special.

Kids practice
comparing and contrasting, careful looking, sorting ideas

What kids do

“These two dinosaurs are cousins. How are they the same? How are they different?”

  1. Dinosaur A
  2. Dinosaur B
  3. Only A in the left circle, only B in the right, both in the middle
  4. The biggest difference is… because…

How to run it

  • Model one idea for each part of the circles before kids start.
  • Younger kids can draw tiny pictures in the circles instead of words.
  • Look for “both” ideas that aren’t about looks: both are dinosaurs, both have names.

Talk about it

  • Which part of the circles was easiest to fill? Hardest?
  • Is a robot dinosaur still a dinosaur?
  • What else could we compare this way?

Take it further

Compare yourself with a character from a book you’re reading.
