Thinking sheet · Look and wonder

Notice, Think, Wonder

Study a strange little alien, then sort your ideas into what you notice, what you think and what you wonder.

Grades
K–5
Time
about 20 minutes
Kids practice
observation, asking questions, telling facts from guesses

What kids do

“Look at this visitor for one whole minute before you write anything.”

  1. Look closely
  2. I notice… (things I can see)
  3. I think… (what might be going on?)
  4. I wonder… (questions I still have)

How to run it

  • Give the class a silent minute to look before anyone writes.
  • Younger kids can draw an arrow to what they notice instead of writing.
  • Collect the best “I wonder” questions on the board.

Talk about it

  • What did you notice that nobody else did?
  • Which “I think” idea could we check? How?
  • Which question would you most like answered?

Take it further

Swap sheets with a partner and try to answer one of their “I wonder” questions with a drawing.
