Four characters, one doesn’t belong. Or does it? Find more than one answer and explain each.

classifying, reasoning, seeing more than one answer

What kids do

“Which one doesn’t belong? There’s more than one right answer!”

  1. A
  2. B
  3. C
  4. D
  5. Answer 1: ___ doesn’t belong because…
  6. Answer 2: ___ doesn’t belong because…
  7. Draw a fifth character that belongs with all four

How to run it

  • Celebrate different answers: every letter can be the odd one out for some reason.
  • Push for reasons beyond looks: the robot isn’t alive, only D can fly, only B has spikes.
  • Great as a quick warm-up on the board.

Talk about it

  • Who found a reason nobody else thought of?
  • Can all four be the odd one out?
  • What makes a reason a good one?
