What kids do

Printed on the sheet:

  1. Write 1 to 6 to put the peace path steps in order.
  2. Think of solutions together.
  3. Stop and calm down. Take three deep breaths.
  4. Say how you feel with an I-message.
  5. Pick a solution you both agree on, then shake hands.
  6. Listen while the other person talks. Don’t interrupt.
  7. Say back what you heard the other person say.
  8. The problem: Jayden and Nora both grab the last jump rope at recess. Jayden says he saw it first.

Teacher tip

Tape a real peace path on the floor and walk it together.

How to use it

  • Practice when everyone is calm, not in the middle of a real conflict.
  • Use the same words from the sheet when a real conflict comes up.
  • Keep finished sheets in an SEL folder so kids can look back on their growth.

Watch for

Bullying is not a conflict between equals. Make sure kids know to tell a grown-up about it.

Talk about it

  • What could each person do to make the problem smaller?
  • How might someone else see it differently?

Take it further

Train a few kids as class peacemakers who help classmates use the steps.
