What kids do

Printed on the sheet:

  1. Each day, set a timer for one minute and try the mindful minute. Before you start and after you finish, rate how calm you feel from 1 (not calm) to 5 (very calm).
  2. Breathing: count each breath in and out, up to 10, then start again.
  3. Listening: close your eyes and count every sound you hear.
  4. Body scan: notice your toes, legs, belly, arms and face, one at a time.
  5. Eating: eat one raisin or cracker very slowly. Notice the taste and feel.
  6. Walking: walk slowly and notice each foot touching the ground.
  7. The mindful minute I liked best, and why:

Teacher tip

Use a timer and do the mindful minute together at the same time each day.

How to use it

  • Do the calming practice yourself with the class. Kids follow your pace.
  • Dim the lights or play soft music while kids work.
  • Let kids choose to share or keep their answers private. Both are fine.

Watch for

Some kids don’t like closing their eyes. Let them look at the floor instead.

Talk about it

  • Which calming idea worked best for you?
  • Have you ever been in a moment like this? What happened?

Take it further

Set up a calm-down corner with the strategy cards and a timer.
