What kids do

Printed on the sheet:

  1. How to do it: spread one hand out like a star. With a finger of your other hand, slide up your thumb as you breathe in and down the other side as you breathe out. Keep going over each finger to your pinky. That is five slow breaths.
  2. Trace your hand here. Then breathe around it: up = breathe in, down = breathe out.
  3. How do I feel after?
  4. A little calmer

Teacher tip

Do it together slowly. Remind kids to go up as they breathe in and down as they breathe out.

How to use it

  • Teach the strategy when kids are calm, so it is ready for big moments.
  • Use it after recess or before a test to settle the room.
  • Use it during morning meeting or right after recess, when the topic is fresh.

Watch for

Some kids don’t like closing their eyes. Let them look at the floor instead.

Talk about it

  • How did your body feel before and after?
  • How might someone else see it differently?
