What kids do

Printed on the sheet:

  1. Pick one small snack, like a raisin, a cracker or a slice of apple. Go slowly. Use each sense before you take a bite, then take the smallest bite you can and chew it slowly.
  2. See: color, shape, spots or lines
  3. Touch: smooth, bumpy, soft or hard?
  4. Smell: sweet, salty, fresh or nothing?
  5. Hear: is there a crunch or a squish?
  6. Taste: what changes as you chew slowly?
  7. Eating slowly was…
  8. Something I noticed that I usually miss:

Teacher tip

Check allergies first. Raisins or crackers work well.

How to use it

  • Teach the strategy when kids are calm, so it is ready for big moments.
  • Use it after recess or before a test to settle the room.
  • Model your own answer first. Kids open up more when the grown-up goes first.

Watch for

Some kids don’t like closing their eyes. Let them look at the floor instead.

Talk about it

  • Which calming idea worked best for you?
  • How might someone else see it differently?

Take it further

Start each afternoon with one minute of mindful breathing.
