What kids do

Printed on the sheet:

  1. Draw a seed you have seen. (A bean? An apple seed?)
  2. Draw your favorite stage.

Teacher tip

Hold up a real seed, a sprouting bean and a potted plant as you name each stage. Kids then color the sheet in the same order.

How to use it

  • Plant a few seeds in clear cups at the start of the unit so kids can check the sheet against real plants.
  • Bring in a real plant with its roots showing and point to each part.
  • Start with a two-minute “I notice, I wonder” talk about the picture on the sheet.

Watch for

Kids who think plants get food from the soil. Plants make their own food with sunlight, water and air.

Talk about it

  • What would happen if a plant got no sunlight?
  • What did you notice that surprised you?

Take it further

Keep a class plant growth chart and measure the plants every Monday.
