What kids do

Printed on the sheet:

  1. Set it up: fold a wet paper towel into a zip bag, slide a dry bean between the towel and the plastic, and tape the bag to a sunny window. Keep the towel damp.

Teacher tip

Staple the journal to a folder so it doesn’t get lost over two weeks. Measure on the same days each week.

How to use it

  • Plant a few seeds in clear cups at the start of the unit so kids can check the sheet against real plants.
  • Bring in a real plant with its roots showing and point to each part.
  • Start with a two-minute “I notice, I wonder” talk about the picture on the sheet.

Watch for

Kids who think plants get food from the soil. Plants make their own food with sunlight, water and air.

Talk about it

  • What would happen if a plant got no sunlight?
  • Where have you seen this outside of school?

Take it further

Keep a class plant growth chart and measure the plants every Monday.
