What kids do

Printed on the sheet:

  1. You need: a magnet and eight objects from around the room. Write each object, make a guess, then touch the magnet to it. Were you right?
  2. My guess: will it stick?
  3. Test: did it stick?
  4. What did the things that stuck have in common?

Teacher tip

Ask kids to explain any wrong prediction in a sentence. Surprises teach the most.

How to use it

  • Give each table a magnet and a tray of small objects before the sheet.
  • Ask kids to predict first, then test, then write.
  • Start with a two-minute “I notice, I wonder” talk about the picture on the sheet.

Watch for

Kids who think all metals stick. Aluminum foil and coins usually don’t.

Talk about it

  • Are all metals magnetic? How do you know?
  • What question do you still have?

Take it further

Make a magnet maze with a paper clip on top of a paper plate.
