What kids do

Printed on the sheet:

  1. Question: how many sheets of paper can a magnet pull a paper clip through? Put a paper clip on the table, cover it with paper, then hold the magnet on top and lift slowly.
  2. My hypothesis: I think the magnet will work through this many sheets:
  3. Did the paper clip lift?
  4. Most sheets it worked through
  5. Was my hypothesis right?
  6. Conclusion: does a magnet work through paper? What happens as the paper gets thicker?

Teacher tip

Use the same paper clip and the same magnet each round for a fair test.

How to use it

  • Give each table a magnet and a tray of small objects before the sheet.
  • Ask kids to predict first, then test, then write.
  • Let partners compare answers and settle any differences with a book or a video.

Watch for

Kids who think all metals stick. Aluminum foil and coins usually don’t.

Talk about it

  • Where do you see magnets at home?
  • Where have you seen this outside of school?

Take it further

Make a magnet maze with a paper clip on top of a paper plate.
