Printed on the sheet:

  1. A magic e at the end makes the vowel say its name. No e? The vowel stays short.

Teacher tip

Read each pair aloud to hear short and long side by side.

How to use it

  • Read the words out loud and listen for the vowel saying its name.
  • Use a vowel team anchor chart while kids work.
  • Say every word on the sheet together before kids start, stretching the sounds.

Watch for

Kids who add an e to every word. Ask them to read the word both ways.

Talk about it

  • What happens to cap when we add an e?
  • Can you think of another word with the same sound?

Take it further

Write a silly long vowel sentence, like a goat in a boat.
