What kids do

“Put the two small words together. Write the big word you made!”

Printed on the sheet:

  1. Two small words make one big word rain + coat → raincoat

Teacher tip

Draw the two small words and the big word.

How to use it

  • Teach one rule at a time and post it on the board.
  • Read each new word in a sentence so kids hear the meaning change.
  • Use it in a small reading group so you can hear each child sound out a few words.

Watch for

Kids who split syllables by letter count instead of sound. Clap the word again.

Talk about it

  • How did the prefix change the meaning?
  • How did you figure out that word?

Take it further
