Teacher tip

Clap, then color. Ask kids to say the name again as they color.

How to use it

  • Teach one rule at a time and post it on the board.
  • Read each new word in a sentence so kids hear the meaning change.
  • Use it in a small reading group so you can hear each child sound out a few words.

Watch for

Kids who split syllables by letter count instead of sound. Clap the word again.

Talk about it

  • Why do we double the last letter here?
  • Can you think of another word with the same sound?

Take it further

Play syllable jump: kids jump once for each syllable.

US Letter, prints well in black and white. Free for home and classroom use: print as many copies as you need.
