Teacher tip

Remind kids: bigger unit to smaller unit, multiply. Smaller to bigger, divide. Write it on the board.

How to use it

  • Keep a geared demo clock at the front and model each type of problem.
  • Color the hour hand and the minute hand differently on the first two clocks.
  • Do the first problem together under a document camera, then let kids finish on their own.

Watch for

Reading the hour hand as the next hour when it is just before it, like 2:50 read as 3:50.

Talk about it

  • How long until lunch? How did you work it out?
  • Which problem was the hardest? What made it hard?

Take it further

Ask kids to record the time of five things they do after school.

US Letter, prints well in black and white. Free for home and classroom use: print as many copies as you need.
