Teacher tip

Ask kids to share what they do at 7 AM and 7 PM. The difference sticks.

How to use it

  • Keep a geared demo clock at the front and model each type of problem.
  • Color the hour hand and the minute hand differently on the first two clocks.
  • Do the first problem together under a document camera, then let kids finish on their own.

Watch for

Reading the hour hand as the next hour when it is just before it, like 2:50 read as 3:50.

Talk about it

  • How do you know which hand is the hour hand?
  • Which problem was the hardest? What made it hard?

Take it further

Make a paper plate clock with brads for the hands.
