What kids do

“Trace each number. Count the rods of ten out loud: 10, 20, 30…”

Teacher tip

Count the rods out loud together, then let kids march or clap on each ten.

How to use it

  • Let kids trace with a finger before a pencil, so they feel the starting point.
  • Pair the sheet with real counters: build the number, then write it.
  • Do the first problem together under a document camera, then let kids finish on their own.

Watch for

Kids who form numbers from the bottom up. Catch it early, before the habit sets.

Talk about it

  • How many more would make ten?
  • Which problem was the hardest? What made it hard?

Take it further

Hunt for numbers in a picture book, on a calendar or on the classroom clock and tally how many you find.
