What kids do

“One ten frame is full. Count the extra dots. Write 10 + ___ = ___.”

Teacher tip

Ask kids to say each one two ways: “fourteen” and “ten and four”.

How to use it

  • Ask kids to touch each item as they count, and to cross it off if they lose track.
  • Do one row together with a ten frame on the board so kids see the five and the ten.
  • Do the first problem together under a document camera, then let kids finish on their own.

Watch for

Kids who say the numbers faster than they touch the objects. Slow the pointing down.

Talk about it

  • What number comes next? How do you know?
  • Which problem was the hardest? What made it hard?

Take it further

Go on a counting walk around the school and record what you find on a tally chart.
