What kids do

“Count the dots. How many empty boxes are left? That is how many more make 10.”

Teacher tip

Kids who know their combinations to 10 will race this. Turn it into a partner flash game afterward.

How to use it

  • Let early counters use real cubes on top of the pictures.
  • Count out loud as a class first, then let kids count in a whisper voice on their own.
  • Do the first problem together under a document camera, then let kids finish on their own.

Watch for

Kids who recount the whole group instead of counting on. Ask, “You already know there are 5 here. What comes next?”

Talk about it

  • Which group has more? How much more?
  • Which problem was the hardest? What made it hard?

Take it further

Play “I’m thinking of a number” with clues like more than 12 and less than 15.
