What kids do

“Count each group. Draw a line to the number that matches.”

Teacher tip

Let kids write the count next to each group before they draw lines. Lines get messy, and the number shows their thinking.

How to use it

  • Let early counters use real cubes on top of the pictures.
  • Count out loud as a class first, then let kids count in a whisper voice on their own.
  • Do the first problem together under a document camera, then let kids finish on their own.

Watch for

Kids who recount the whole group instead of counting on. Ask, “You already know there are 5 here. What comes next?”

Talk about it

  • Which group has more? How much more?
  • Which problem was the hardest? What made it hard?

Take it further

Go on a counting walk around the school and record what you find on a tally chart.
