What kids do

“Draw lines to cut the shape into the equal parts named under it.”

Teacher tip

Let kids cut and fold paper shapes first to check their lines.

How to use it

  • Fold a paper strip into halves, fourths and eighths before the sheet so kids can see the pieces.
  • Keep fraction strips or fraction circles on each table.
  • Do the first problem together under a document camera, then let kids finish on their own.

Watch for

Comparing fractions by the bottom number alone. Go back to the bars and look at the size of the pieces.

Talk about it

  • How do you know the parts are equal?
  • Which problem was the hardest? What made it hard?
