What kids do

“What number goes in the box to make the fact true? Count up from the first number!”

Teacher tip

Ask kids to count up from the first number on their fingers. The number of fingers is the missing addend.

How to use it

  • Keep a number line or hundred chart taped to the desk for kids who need it.
  • Use it as a timed sheet once a week and have kids chart their own score.
  • Do the first problem together under a document camera, then let kids finish on their own.

Watch for

Columns that drift. Turn lined paper sideways or use graph paper to keep digits lined up.

Talk about it

  • How can an addition fact help you solve a subtraction fact?
  • Which problem was the hardest? What made it hard?

Take it further

Play a dice game: roll two dice, add or subtract, and race to a hundred.
