What kids do

“Add the three numbers. Tip: find two digits that make 10 first.”

Teacher tip

Have kids circle two numbers that make 10 before adding. It is a habit that pays off for years.

How to use it

  • Use it as a timed sheet once a week and have kids chart their own score.
  • Let partners check each other with a calculator after they finish.
  • Do the first problem together under a document camera, then let kids finish on their own.

Watch for

Subtracting the smaller digit from the bigger one in each column (54 − 27 = 33). Ask kids to say “Can I take 7 from 4?” before they write.

Talk about it

  • Which strategy did you use: counting on, making ten or a doubles fact?
  • Which problem was the hardest? What made it hard?

Take it further

Play a dice game: roll two dice, add or subtract, and race to a hundred.
