What kids do

“Count from 1 to 100. Write the missing numbers in the empty squares.”

Printed on the sheet:

  1. Tip: each row counts by ones. Each column counts by tens!

Teacher tip

Point out that every number in a column ends with the same digit. Kids who notice this fill the chart much faster.

How to use it

  • Ask kids to touch each item as they count, and to cross it off if they lose track.
  • Do one row together with a ten frame on the board so kids see the five and the ten.
  • Do the first problem together under a document camera, then let kids finish on their own.

Watch for

Kids who say the numbers faster than they touch the objects. Slow the pointing down.

Talk about it

  • How did you keep track of what you already counted?
  • Which problem was the hardest? What made it hard?

Take it further

Play “I’m thinking of a number” with clues like more than 12 and less than 15.
