What kids do

“Read the hour hand. Count by fives, then by ones. Write the time.”

Teacher tip

Kids count by fives to the last big number, then by ones. Have them touch each tick mark with a pencil tip.

How to use it

  • Count by fives around the clock together before kids start.
  • Connect it to your real schedule: what time is lunch, recess, the bus?
  • Do the first problem together under a document camera, then let kids finish on their own.

Watch for

Counting minutes by ones from the 12 instead of by fives.

Talk about it

  • Why do some clocks have hands and some just numbers?
  • Which problem was the hardest? What made it hard?

Take it further

Ask kids to record the time of five things they do after school.
