Teacher tip

Have kids sort each group in their head biggest to smallest before they count on.

How to use it

  • Hand out real or play coins so kids can sort and count them first.
  • Teach kids to count the biggest coins first, then count on.
  • Do the first problem together under a document camera, then let kids finish on their own.

Watch for

Counting every coin as one cent or as the same value. Sort by coin first.

Talk about it

  • How do you count up to find change?
  • Which problem was the hardest? What made it hard?
